Airline travel with boards

There are no standardised rules when it comes to airline charges for boards. Some airlines have a fixed fee per boardbag but most are dependant on many factors such as the airport and what time you check-in, the plane’s passenger and luggage capacity, your appearance and attitude and most importantly the mood of the person at the check-in counter. Usually bodyboarders will not have to pay excess, unlike longboarders, who sometimes don’t get their boards on at all.

Some of the more crucial points to remember include;

  • Arrive early, dress well, be polite and smile alot
  • Ask your travel agent on airline’s policy, and double check by phoning check-in desk at the airport
  • Warn the airline to help them manage their luggage capacity
  • Some surf agents have already negotiated board charges
  • Most airlines charge per bag, so pack your boards in one boardbag
  • Always use a tough. durable boardbag, and give extra protection to the fins
